There are two schools of thought when it comes to potty training a boy. You can either teach him to urinate

standing up or sitting down. Most pediatricians recommend first teaching a boy to sit down for both urination and bowel movements in order to keep the process as simple as possible. Later you can teach your boy to stand like his Dad.

It’s hard to know when a tips for potty training boys. Most kids can feel when they need to eliminate beginning around 1 years old, but it can take a year or more for them to be able to control that sensation. If your child starts to announce when he is about to soil his diaper and/or starts to express disdain for being in a dirty diaper or getting changed, the time may be right.

Start the process by explaining what the potty is and that only “big boys” can use the potty. If your son is ready, he will express a desire to be a “big boy” too.  Start taking him to sit on the potty regularly, and if he is successful, give him lots of praise and reward him. Really make a big deal when he uses the potty right, as kids at this age have a real desire to please.

Once your son is using the potty regularly for both pee and poops, you can start teaching him how to stand. One way to start this process is to let your son watch you peeing and model the behavior. Another trick is to put cheerios in the bowel and tell your son to aim at them. Whatever you do, be prepared for lots of clean ups along the way. Just ask your parents.
