Potty training a little girl may feel awkward to you at first, but it’s a perfectly natural part of fatherhood. It’s no more awkward than changing your daughter’s diaper, and if you get it right, you won’t have to do that anymore either.
Potty training a little girl may feel awkward to you at first, but it’s a perfectly natural part of fatherhood. It’s no more awkward than changing your daughter’s diaper, and if you get it right, you won’t have to do that anymore either.
The first step to training a little girl to use the toilet is showing her what you want her to do. This can be done by having her watch Mommy use the bathroom. If there is no mommy around, there are books and videos you can buy created just for this purpose.
You’ll probably need to buy a potty for you daughter to learn on because some kids are afraid to use the “big toilet.” If you let her help pick one out, she’ll want to use it that much more. Keep the potty in the bathroom near the “big toilet” so she learns to associate using the potty with going to the bathroom.
The next step is to switch her from diapers to “big girl” underpants. Some people recommend using pull-ups during potty training, but other believe it delays the process. You’ll have to make a judgment call.
In the beginning, you should stick to a potty schedule and take your daughter to the potty regularly even when she may not need to go. When she successfully uses the potty you must celebrate the accomplishment and let her know how proud of her you are for being a “big girl.” Rewards are also appreciated. The key is to make process as fun as possible, so she feels like it’s a game and not a chore. |
