If you weren’t the maker of meals in your family before you became single, feeding your kids can be one of the hardest parts of job before you. Many kids go through a picky stage where food is concerned and simply won’t eat what you put before them. Rather than raging against the machine, work with it to make meal times harmonious in your home.
Sit down with your kids and talk about what they like to eat. Of course, the standard answer is, “Ice cream!” While, that might be your answer as well, as the parent it’s your job to deliver balanced meals. Suggest different types of food to your kids and make a list of the ones they will agree to eat.
Take the kids to the grocery store with you and let them be a part of the process. If your kids help pick out the foods they want, they will be more likely to eat them. It’s important to pay attention to the nutritional content of the foods you choose, however, particularly the sugar content. Make a deal with your kids that they can each choose one junk food only and stick to it.
Look for time savers. There will always be days when you won’t have time to cook a full meal, and on those days a frozen pizza or lasagna can be a lifesaver. Pre-cooked items can also save you a lot of time. If you’re not the best cook, get some lessons from a friend who is or invest in a universal cookbook. Knowing how to make a few simple dishes can make you seem like a gourmet to your kids.
