what to buy for a baby PDF Print E-mail

luxury baby strollerAs you have probably guessed, there are plenty of things you will need to buy in the coming months. While you, or more likely your partner, may be anxious to do some shopping for the baby's nursery as soon as you find out that a baby is on the way, you should refrain from making any purchases until the 5th or 6th month. Pregnancy can be a risky and tenuous venture, so you will want to make sure that everything is stable before you make too many purchases. Dealing with a pregnancy loss is hard enough without the constant reminder of baby paraphernalia in your home. This may sound harsh, but it is, unfortunately, a reality. That said, month 5 or 6 is always a good time to start preparing for your tot.

DIAPERING SUPPLIES
In case you didn't know...A changing table
is the perfect place to change your baby's diaper and to store all diaper-changing essentials, like diapers and lotions. A changing pad will help keep your tot comfy while you remove the dirty diaper and replace it with a clean one. Would you like your diaper changed while lying naked on a cold and hard surface? Enough said.

Changing pad covers keep the changing pad clean - babies are known pee and poop on everything. Just so you know, babies do not wait for the diaper to be securely in place before they relieve themselves. And one more thing, newborns go through about 10-12 diapers a day in the beginning, so make sure that you are fully stocked!

Here are a few things you will definitely need to buy before the baby arrives:
- 1 changing table
- 1 changing pad
- 2-3 changing pad covers
- Plenty of newborn and size 1 diapers
- Diaper cream
- Wipes
- Diaper pail

FEEDING SUPPLIES
First, you should know that the type of feeding supplies you buy will depend entirely on the feeding method you and your partner have chosen. That is, will your partner breastfeed or bottle-feed with formula? Or maybe you have decided to use a combination of both.

If your partner chooses to bottle feed
, you will want to speak with your doctor about a recommended brand of formula. In addition to the formula, you will need:
- 6-12 bottles (both 4 oz and 8 oz sizes)
- 4-6 newborn nipples help regulate the liquid flow
- 1 bottle sterilizer
- 2-3 bottle brushes

If your partner chooses to breastfeed
, you will need:
- 1 Breast pump (electric or hand pump)
- Plenty of breast pads
- A tub of nipple cream
- Numerous breast milk storage bags
- 2-4 bottles and nipples
- 1 bottle sterilizer
- 2-3 bottle brushes
- 1 nursing pillow

By the way, a nursing pillow
helps keep the baby in a comfortable position so that your partner doesn't have to hurt her back during feedings. As if being pregnant for 9 1/2 months wasn't long enough!

BATHING SUPPLIES

- 1 small bath tub
- Shampoo and body wash made specifically for babies
- 2-4 washcloths
- 3-5 hooded bath towels
- Tub toys and toy holder
- Baby oil
- Nail scissors
