The Dual Income, No Kids life was a wonderful while it lasted. An abundance of money and time made traveling and date nights the rule rather than the exception. Now that you are starting a family, however, all of that must and will change.
Going from DINK to Dad is a fundamental change that will touch every aspect of your life. Such a transition can be daunting, but if you know what to expect, you can prepare yourself ahead of time. Here are some of the major changes headed your way.
Where Your Time Goes – You used to be able to make your schedule according to your needs, but you will now have to schedule your life around your child’s needs. Infants take a tremendous amount of time, more than you can imagine. Just getting ready to leave the house can take an hour or so. You’ll be tired and cranky from lack of sleep, and you’ll feel like you have no time for yourself.
Your Relationship With Your Partner – When the baby arrives, it will immediately take priority with its mother. After all, you both have been endowed with keeping the helpless little tike alive and that task will take most of your spouse’s time and attention. You may feel neglected at first, but in time you will be able to fashion a new level of intimacy in your relationship.
Your Bleeding Wallet – Whether or not you continue to rely on a dual income after the baby, your finances will take a hit. Baby furniture, baby clothes, diapers, strollers, a more family friendly car or even a bigger home are all things you might need to pay for as your family grows. Planning is key.
